Meanwhile, the political outreach of the Yogi was being developed along with every other facet of the organization. These connections he cultivated became significant as he worked to gain recognition for Sikhs worldwide. Significantly, he had his own lawyers (entitled Chancellors) working on achieving proper recognition and dispensation for the religious requirement of Sikhs to maintain beards, hair and turbans while serving in the military. Over the years he was consistent in donating to both the Republican and Democratic political parties.

In 1977, the year that Jimmy Carter was to assume the presidency, Black Krishna and I were the representatives the Yogi sent to the inauguration event on the Mall in Washington, D.C. It was a cold and sunny morning, as we stood in the crowd in front of the new president-elect as he was sworn in. Afterwards, we made our way to the Lincoln Memorial where we connected with Coretta King, the wife of slain civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. No introductions seemed to be required as our head-to-toe white garb and elegant turbans and chunis were clearly signifying a religious affiliation. We all took photographs together on the steps leading up to that revered monument.

On one of our yearly trips to India, we attended the Independence Day Parade in New Delhi. The Yogi and a few of us had passes into the VIP viewing area and I was pleasantly surprised to find myself standing alongside Jaqueline Kennedy and her handsome son, John Kennedy, Jr.
